For anyone who may have come late to the party and are unfamiliar with the funk/soul/jazz hybrid sound of Toronto's Philosopher Kings, this live CD is an excellent introduction. Playing live usually draws out the spontaneity from jazz bands, and The Philosopher Kings, who consider themselves to be jazz musicians first, are no exception. This record features faithful performances of their most popular songs ("Charms," "Lay My Body Down," and "You Don't Love Me (Like You Used to Do)"), as well as a soulfully rejuvenated "Hurts to Love You" medley wherein the mostly female audience can be heard screaming and swooning to Gerald Eaton singing Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On." On the freshly original "SuperSex 69," elements of retro- funk and disco meld while the backing orchestra delivers swelling horns and strings. Read More
