Katie Franzios reports on C. difficile Website.

The province is trying to improve patient safety and has launched a Website monitoring hospital infection rates. C. difficile numbers will now be published, something mandatory for all hospitals.

Starting next month, Ontario hospitals will also be required to report on C. Difficile outbreaks (six cases in any single hospital unit) and clusters (three cases in a week).

There were 319 cases of C. difficile in Ontario hospitals in August. Once you crunch the numbers, the province has lower rates than those reported in both Quebec and the United Kingdom.

However, the province's new mandatory reporting requirements don't include C. difficile-related deaths. The province hopes to do a study on how to best report them.

CFRB's Katie Franzios has this report.

The province also announced the creation an infection control resource team that can be dispatched to any hospital with an outbreak. There will also be 66 more infection control practitioners hired at hospitals and public health units.
