It's been one year since the province adopted the street racing legislation and nearly 8, 600 drivers have been nabbed for excessive speeding and dangerous driving.

"It's really disappointing in a way.  I thought there would be a quick response, a very favourable quick response from the public and we wouldn't see these numbers."said OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino.

Fantino joined OPP officers and Ministry of Transportation personnel Tuesday morning for the one-year anniversary of the new law.  Just hours earlier, police say speed and alcohol was a factor in a crash that killed a taxi cab driver.  The driver of another vehicle has been arrested.

Commissioner Fantino says although the number of people being pulled over to street racing is alarming, this legislation has saved lives.

"Speed-related fatalities are down over 40% on OPP patrolled highways, so to that end, I suppose there are some very positive things happening."
