Day two of city council will prove to be an interesting one as councillors continue to debate charging a fee for plastic bags at stores and if water bottles should be sold on city property.

Chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee councillor Glen DeBaermaeker says it's about choosing a drinking fountain over the bottled stuff. He says not only do the bottles generate waste but they are, more often than not, filled with the exact same water found in the city's taps.

Meanwhile, concerns about how residents are stretched pretty thin in these tough economic were raised when debating a fee for plastic bags in stores. However, Mayor David Miller says grocery chains are on board with charging five cents per bag - some already do so and others will start next year.

Miller says the city wants to reduce waste sent to landfills by 70 per cent

The debate will continue in the morning.
